Punta Arena Canyons or Small Cut is a great dive site along the barrier reef a few miles north of San Pedro. It can be reached after a short boat ride but you will have to cross a narrow passage in the reef system. This open water passage can be rough and can make this dive site hard to reach. Diving starts at sixty feet where you will find the reefs top coral formations, vertical canyons and in red algae covered tunnels. One tunnel is particularly famous as it has a triangular opening and enters the reef for more than seventy feet, exiting at one hundred feet deep. Some experience is needed as there are parts that are completely black because of its length. The outside coral reef is brilliant and attracts Nassau grouper, spadefish, dog snapper and several types of jacks. Entering the tunnel makes a great adventure for starting divers and more experienced ones as well.
