Lighthouse Atoll is one of the three larger offshore atolls in Belize, consisting out of the cayes Long Caye, Hat Caye, Half Moon Caye, Sandbore Caye, White Pelican Caye and Northern Caye. The last and largest one even has an airstrip complete with luxury resort for some of the richer tourists. This small and low sandy island has many mangroves and an inshore lagoon with saltwater crocodiles and snowy egrets. Lighthouse Reef is located at more than thirty miles east of Belize City, but as this is the most famous atoll, you can arrange tours from all over Belize.
Lighthouse Reef is famous for two world renowned dive sites named the Blue Hole and Half Moon Caye Wall. The Blue Hole, rated as a top ten dive site in the world, was formed because of a one thousand feet wide meteorite that struck the earth millions of years ago. Half Moon Caye Natural Monument is loved by wildlife enthusiasts as it is the resting place for thousands of red-footed boobies, iguanas, frigate birds, seahawks and warblers. It is also the place where loggerhead and hawksbill turtles lay their eggs. West of Long Caye features some of the steepest drop-offs in Belize, starting at thirty feet dropping down well beyond recreational diving limits. Here you can find huge jewfish, barracuda's, sharks and jacks. Because Lighthouse Reef is the most seaward of all the atolls in Belize, it also offers some of the best visibilities with more than one hundred feet being not uncommon.
