At thirty miles southeast of Dangriga you will find Glovers Reef Atoll, one of the three larger offshore atolls in Belize. It was named after John Glover, an English pirate that used the islands for attacking Spanish merchant vessels in the eighteen century. Today there are luxury resorts at the cayes Southwest, Northeast and Long Caye while Middle Caye and North Caye are uninhabited. Southwest Caye is privately owned by the Usher family since 1942, housing the Isla Marisol Resort which is known to have some of the best dining. Separated by only a small creek you can enter another atoll and find Manta Resort. The reason to stay at these resorts is not its nightlife but attracts sunbathers, divers and fishermen from all over the world.

Glover Reef is a World Heritage Site and Marine Reserve with strict rules about collecting shells, fishing and diving. Unlike many Pacific atolls, which are built on top of volcanoes, the Belizean atolls sit on top of underwater ridges close enough to the surface to form excellent coral formations and huge sponges. Besides its healthy coral life you will also be astonished by the clarity of its surrounding waters and the abundance and diversity of fish species. You can see king mackerel, eagle rays, bonefish, tarpon, groupers and all the coral reef fishes. Even whale sharks are seen here in the months of April to June. Long Caye Wall is a spectacular wall dive site reached from shore or after a short boat ride, perfect for diving and snorkeling as well. To the southwest of Glovers Reef is another old time favorite offering Pinnacles reaching from the deep to within the surface.

Half Moon Caye Wall is diving at a steep drop-off just south of the cay with spectacular marine life. Long Caye Ridge is another spectacular wall dive off the western side of Long Caye where large aquatic life is not absent.
